Leaders in the Michigan GOP are reportedly encouraging Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to run for president in 2024 after several Trump-backed candidates faltered in the midterm elections.

A letter from 18 state House representatives was hand-delivered by state Rep. Bryan Posthumus to DeSantis last month, per a report from Politico.

The letter says DeSantis is “uniquely and exceptionally qualified to provide the leadership and competence that is, unfortunately, missing,” with the signatories pledging to “stand ready and willing to help” him win the Great Lake State in 2024, per the report.

DeSantis has not announced a bid for the White House, but the buzz surrounding a run has picked up steam after the governor’s massive reelection win in the Sunshine State last year.

In the Republican primary for 2024, only former President Donald Trump has announced a run, with some experts speculating many possible candidates are waiting to see what DeSantis does.

The Florida governor has received criticism from some likely 2024 candidates, including Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH), over some of his policies, including abortion restrictions and his stance on companies involving themselves in politics.

“Where was Gov. DeSantis? Hiding behind a 15-week ban,” a spokesperson for Noem said in a statement to the National Review. “Does he believe that 14-week-old babies don’t have a right to live?”

Sununu applauded DeSantis’s pushback on “woke policy” but also said that “going after private business is a whole different story” on Fox News earlier this month. In the same interview, Sununu said a 2024 run was definitely in “conversations that we’re having.”
