Midterm results: Longtime Rep. Marcy Kaptur fends off challenge from JR Majewski in Ohio House race

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) secured her 21st term by defeating J.R. Majewski (R) in Ohio‘s 9th Congressional District.

The district, which voted for Donald Trump over Joe Biden 50.6%-47.7% in 2020, covers the cities of Sandusky and Toledo.

First elected in 1982, Kaptur focused her campaign on the economy, jobs, natural resources, and energy. Even with redistricting and trends making the district more Republican, she was able to stave off her toughest reelection challenge since she unseated Rep. Ed Weber 40 years ago.

Majewski, who was endorsed by Trump, tried to tap into the majority that voted for the former president two years ago but was ultimately unable to defeat the established congresswoman.

He garnered controversy in September after his military record was questioned based on an Associated Press report saying he did not serve in Afghanistan as he had previously claimed. Majewski said his deployments to Afghanistan were listed as classified.

Kaptur’s seat was one of dozens the GOP targeted in hopes of gaining a sizable majority in the House of Representatives.
