Vice President Kamala Harris will swear in Karen Bass as the first female mayor of Los Angeles.

Bass asked Harris, the first black and south Asian woman to be elected vice president, to administer the oath of office, according to a Harris aide. The ceremony will take place next Sunday in Los Angeles, where Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff maintain a residence.

Harris and President Joe Biden both endorsed Bass soon after the primary, with the vice president rallying for her in Los Angeles the day before Election Day.

Bass defeated developer Rick Caruso in a bruising race that saw an unexpected challenge from the Democratic billionaire.

Caruso’s campaign advisers were presumed to have beaten the California congresswoman before when Bass and Harris faced off as rivals during the vetting process for Biden’s vice presidential running mate in 2020.

Bass and Caruso each drew prominent endorsements from celebrities and political heavyweights in the race for mayor.

The race was called nearly two weeks after Election Day.

Bass, a longtime congresswoman and state lawmaker, will take the reins of a city frustrated by rising crime and homelessness after eight years under Democratic Mayor Eric Garcetti.

A national co-chair of Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, Garcetti was nominated as U.S. ambassador to India but has not been confirmed.

The outgoing mayor was sworn in in 2013 by Kenia Castillo, an eighth-grader whom he met years earlier at a rally for janitors.
