Former Vice President Mike Pence took a swipe at his former running mate, saying, “I think we’ll have better choices in the future” for president.

Pence made perhaps his most severe statements yet against former President Donald Trump in an interview with ABC’s David Muir. The two appear to have fallen out since the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, with Pence making increasingly critical comments toward the former president publicly. In the interview, Muir asked Pence if he believes Trump should “ever be president again.”

“David, I think that’s up to the American people,” Pence responded. “But I think we’ll have better choices in the future.”

“People in this country actually get along pretty well once you get out of politics,” he added. “And I think they want to see their national leader start to reflect that same, that same compassion and generosity of spirit. And I think, so in the days ahead, I think there will be better choices.”

He also teased at a possible presidential run, declining to answer directly whether or not he would run, but said he was considering it.

“We’re giving it consideration in our house,” he said when asked if he would run for president. “Prayerful consideration.”

Pence spent much of the interview describing his experiences on Jan. 6, all but condemning the president’s actions during the riot. He described Trump’s words and actions on Jan. 6 as “reckless.”
