DC hits peak cherry blossom bloom: Washington Photos of the Week

Tourists flocked to Washington, D.C., this week for the National Cherry Blossom Festival as the Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin hit peak bloom.

The trees were planted in 1912 and were a gift from the people of Japan. Their pink blooms have signaled the start of spring in the district ever since. The festival runs through April 16.

On Capitol Hill, lawmakers grilled TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about national security threats posed by the popular Chinese social media app. House Democrats also blasted the passage of the Parents Bill of Rights Act, calling it a form of censorship and fascism. Secretary of State Antony Blinken testified, and the House Freedom Caucus dug in with their spending cut demands as a condition for raising the debt limit.
