Cotton blasts DOJ’s ‘blatant double standard’ for charging Trump but not Biden

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) expressed harsh criticism of the U.S. Department of Justice for its “blatant double standard” in pressing charges against former President Donald Trump for his handling of classified documents in the wake of special counsel Robert Hur’s report.

The report, released this past week, stated that President Joe Biden would present himself as a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory” if he were to stand trial for his handling of classified documents, with the report suggesting it would be difficult to convince a jury to convict him because of this. This statement comes in the wake of Trump being charged with 37 charges last year related to storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, even though it has also been discovered that Biden had kept classified documents in the garage of his Delaware home.

“There’s no new bombshells about President Biden in this, the American people have seen for years that he is a man with a failing memory,” Cotton said on Fox News Sunday. “What this report indicates, though, is that you have a blatant double standard. If Joe Biden is not going to face criminal charges, then Donald Trump shouldn’t be facing criminal charges either.”

The Arkansas senator went on to state that the reason Biden is not facing charges for his handling of classified documents is because he is “a failed president.” He also claimed that the Democratic Party “knows” the only way Biden can beat Trump is if the former president is charged and imprisoned.

“That’s what you’d expect to see in a place like Pakistan and Brazil, not in the United States of America,” Cotton said.

Other details discovered in Hur’s report include that Biden struggled to remember what year he became vice president and what year he left the office. The president also struggled to remember what year his son Beau died.

Trump, who is running for president again in 2024, reacted to the report by calling Biden’s lack of charges a political attack against him and called for special counsel Jack Smith to drop the charges relating to his mishandling of classified documents.

Vice President Kamala Harris, meanwhile, has described Hur’s report as a “politically motivated” document that “could not be more wrong on the facts.” She added that the comments made on Biden in the report were “gratuitous, inaccurate, and inappropriate.”
