Biden campaign and DNC hammer Trump in Arizona over abortion

President Joe Biden‘s campaign kept focus on the brewing battle over abortion in Arizona with the launch of a new ad Thursday attacking former President Donald Trump.

The 30-second “Power Back” ad is part of a seven-figure buy in Arizona, a top battleground state in the 2024 race, where Democrats are hoping to win the state and the open Senate seat again.

Biden speaks directly to Arizona voters in the ad, once again blaming Trump for the dilemma women face over access to abortion, as images of women looking sullen are shown.

“The question is if Donald Trump gets back in power, what freedom will you lose next?” Biden asks. “Your body and your decisions belong to you. Not the government. Not Donald Trump. I will fight like hell to get your freedom back.”

The ad blitz targets a coalition of voters who could help deliver Arizona to Biden, including young people, women, and Latinos. It will also be aired during popular shows including Abbott Elementary, Survivor, Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol, The Voice, and Saturday Night Live.

Biden won Arizona in 2020 by fewer than 11,000 votes.

But after the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a Civil War-era law banning nearly all abortions and has no exceptions for rape or incest, the 2024 race has now become a referendum not just on Biden’s administration but on abortion.

Earlier this week, the Biden campaign launched another ad, “Willow’s Box,” featuring a testimonial from Amanda Zurawski, a Texas woman who was unable to receive an abortion after she suffered a miscarriage.

The Biden campaign spent the past several days lambasting Trump over his comments on Monday that abortion access was best left to states and his bragging over indirectly overturning Roe v. Wade.

“This week, women across the state of Arizona are watching in horror as an abortion ban from 1864 with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of a woman will soon become the law of the land for Arizonans. This nightmare is only possible because of Donald Trump,” campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. “Arizonans deserve to know that it’s Donald Trump bragging about taking them back to a time before women could vote, for putting their lives in danger, and for promising to go even further to strip women’s rights if he’s reelected.”

The Democratic National Committee followed suit on Thursday with English and Spanish billboards across the Phoenix and Tempe metro areas blaming Trump for the state Supreme Court ruling.

The billboard says, “Abortion is banned in Arizona thanks to Donald Trump. He won’t stop until it’s banned nationwide.”

Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he thought the ruling went too far and that he would not sign a national abortion ban into law.

“It’s all about state’s rights. It’ll be straightened out. I’m sure the governor and everybody else are going to bring it back within reason,” he said.

But Democrats maintain Trump will ban abortion nationwide if he gets another term in the White House.

“Donald Trump owns Arizona’s cruel 160-year-old abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, and every single extreme abortion ban that has gone into effect across this country,” DNC spokesman Cameron Niven said in a statement Thursday. “Trump said so himself — he is proud that he overturned Roe v. Wade, and if he gets a second term, he and his allies want to ban abortion in all 50 states with or without Congress.”

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit Arizona on Friday as she has stepped up campaigning on abortion access across the nation.
