Actress rejects Hollywood body shaming: ‘I’m never losing weight to look fantastic’

British actress Florence Pugh said she refuses to comply with Hollywood’s unrealistic standards for women’s bodies.
While teaching fans how to make a “garlicky crostini” in a video with Vogue, Pugh shared how body image can be a significant concern.
“Body image for women is a major thing,” Pugh said. “From the moment you start growing thighs and bums and boobs and all of it, everything starts changing. And your relationship with food starts changing.”

“I had a weird chapter at the beginning of my career, but that was because I wasn’t complying. I think that was confusing to people, especially in Hollywood,” she continued. “Women in Hollywood, especially young women in Hollywood, are obviously putting themselves in all these ways in order to get whatever opportunity that they need to get because that’s just the way that it’s been.”
Pugh, who is also a social media chef, noted that she put her “foot down,” admitting that she loves food.
The actress called for a more realistic approach to body image.
“We are human, we are bodies,” Pugh expounded in her Vogue cover story. “Yes, I can put makeup on and look good for a premiere. But at the end of the day, I still have hair on the top of my lip and I still smell after a workout and I still get spots when I’m stressed.”
“I’m never losing weight to look fantastic for a role,” she added. “It’s more like: How would this character have lived? What would she be eating?”

Pugh’s comments follow the backlash she received for wearing a sheer gown to last summer’s Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2022-23 fashion show.
In response to her critics, she took to Instagram, saying: “I’ve lived in my body for a long time. I’m fully aware of my breast size and am not scared of it. What’s more concerning is … why are you so scared of breasts? Small? Large? Left? Right? Only one? Maybe none? What. Is. So. Terrifying.”
