Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced a bill Thursday morning that would put a stop to federal funding of the World Health Organization, with the congressman citing the WHO’s promotion of abortion and gender ideology, as well as praise of China during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The No Taxpayer Funding for the World Health Organization Act states that, if enacted, “the United States may not provide any assessed or voluntary contributions to the World Health Organization.”

“Funneling millions of taxpayer dollars to the corrupt World Health Organization that serves the Chinese Communist Party is a slap in the face to hardworking American families struggling under record high inflation, and to all those whose lives and livelihoods were ruined and destroyed by the COVID pandemic,” Roy said in a statement provided to the Washington Examiner by his spokesperson.

“The WHO not only regularly promotes abortion and radical gender ideology but also praised China for their ‘leadership’ at the beginning of COVID-19 and has done nothing to hold the CCP accountable for the spread of COVID-19. It is far past time for Congress to use its power of the purse to cut off U.S. funding to this corrupt international body just like the Trump Administration did,” the statement continued.

As noted in the statement, the WHO repeatedly issued praise to China for its handling of the COVID-19 virus.

In summer 2020, President Donald Trump began proceedings to withdraw the United States from the WHO. Trump was vocally critical of both China and the WHO from the onset of the pandemic. “The world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese government,” he said in May 2020.

In 2021, then-chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci announced President Joe Biden’s intention to remain in the WHO.

Roy also hit the organization for its controversial promotion of both abortion and gender. The WHO notably considers abortion to be “critical” care for women, promoting “safe abortion services” around the globe. The organization also claims “that sex is not limited to male or female” and urges people to go “beyond binary.”
