Speaker Kevin McCarthy is calling for Congress to investigate President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents following reports the information was stored in an unsecured office at the Penn Biden Center and at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

The California Republican said the new select subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government could handle the inquiry but could be led by one of the other standing committees. McCarthy also alleged that Biden knew he has the documents, a claim Biden has denied, previously voicing that he was not aware they were improperly stored.

“It could go from that committee or others, but I think Congress has to investigate this. Here’s an individual that’s been in office for more than 40 years. Here’s an individual that sat on 60 Minutes that was so concerned about President Trump’s documents locked in behind, and now, we find out this is a vice president keeping it for years out in the open in different locations,” McCarthy said.

“I do not think any American believes that justice should not be equal to all,” he added, “and we found from this administration what happened before every single election, whatever comes out that they utilize to try to falsify it, to try to have different standards for their own beliefs. That doesn’t work in America.”

McCarthy said he did not see differences between former President Donald Trump’s and Biden’s handling of classified documents.

“From one standpoint, they knew the documents were there. They actually asked President Trump to put another lock on so they were locked. You look at President Biden — he wasn’t president; he’s vice president — held these in different locations right out in the open,” he said.

“He criticized President Trump. Did he utilize the Justice Department to raid President Trump? Do you think that was right? They knew this has happened to President Biden before the election, but they kept it a secret from the American public,” he continued.

Shortly before Attorney General Merrick Garland’s announcement of a special counsel to look into the matter, McCarthy said he did not think it was a necessary move.
