Special Counsel Jack Smith, whose investigations revolve around former President Donald Trump, is zeroing in on how his subpoena targets are footing their legal bills.

His office has fired off a flurry of subpoenas in recent weeks seeking retention agreement documents from lawyers representing allies of former President Donald Trump to determine if outsiders were covering their legal expenses, CNN reported.

The new round of subpoenas follows a theme of Smith eyeing the money trail as he oversees the Justice Department’s investigation on the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and coinciding efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Questions emerged about Trumpworld footing legal bills for individuals caught in investigative crosshairs during the House Jan. 6 committee inquiry. Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson recounted in testimony before the panel how she switched from a Trump-funded attorney who nudged her against cooperating with it.

Hutchinson said the Trump-aligned lawyer prodded her to downplay her role or recollection of key events.

Smith has reportedly also subpoenaed Trump allies for disbursements received from the Save America PAC in the aftermath of the election amid scrutiny over whether the group misled donors by peddling false claims about the 2020 election being stolen. Smith also subpoenaed Rudy Giuliani for information about payments he gathered during his efforts to challenge the 2020 election.

Multiple Trump associates have made appearances before a grand jury involved in the matter, CNN reported.

Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland last year following Trump’s 2024 campaign launch to spearhead the Justice Department’s Jan. 6-related inquiry and the Mar-a-Lago classified document saga.
