The White House declined to say Wednesday exactly when President Joe Biden was briefed on the classified documents discovered to be improperly housed at the Penn Biden Center, despite a commitment from the president to act transparently throughout the investigation.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took questions on the subject for the first time at Wednesday’s press briefing but declined to offer any additional comment beyond Biden’s own from the day prior. She was specifically asked about when Biden was briefed on the documents’ Nov. 2 discovery and why the White House did not disclose or even acknowledge the investigation until months after the midterm elections, but referred all additional inquiries to the Department of Justice.

“The president has said, as soon as his lawyers realized these documents were there, they did the right thing, and immediately turned them over to the archives. As he said, his team is cooperating fully with the review,” she said in one exchange. “As the president told you, as my colleagues have said to many of you, we are committed to doing the right thing. We’re doing this in the right way, and we will provide further details when it’s appropriate.”

“At this time, I’m not going to go beyond what the president said yesterday. I’m not going to go beyond what my colleagues from the White House Counsel shared with many of you, as well on Monday, and so I’m just going to leave it there,” Jean-Pierre repeated when pressed on when the president himself was first made aware of the situation.

Jean-Pierre was also challenged on comments Biden made about former President Donald Trump‘s handling of sensitive government documents following the Mar-a-Lago raid.
