Three friends from the United States were found dead in a Mexican Airbnb.
The trio was discovered in a wellness check conducted by police after the boyfriend of one of the victims called the Airbnb owner, according to WTKR. He had been on the phone with Kandace Florence on the evening of Oct. 30 when she started reporting feeling unwell, according to WAVY. She then told him something wasn’t right before being disconnected. The families of the victims have complained that Mexican authorities were being difficult in communicating their findings.

“The Mexican police were not very forthcoming with information,” said Jennifer Marshall, mother of one of the victims. “Also, the language barrier was incredibly difficult as well.”
The families also complained of their inability to receive the belongings of the deceased. Their bodies are expected to arrive in the U.S. by flight in the coming days.
The trio was in Mexico celebrating the Day of the Dead, celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2. The country is famous for its boisterous celebrations of the holiday, which, although commemorating the dead, is characterized by jovial celebrations. One of the victims had sent pictures of the three dressed up for the occasion before their deaths.
The U.S. State Department appears to be involved in the investigation as well, telling WTKR in a statement, “We can confirm the death of three U.S. citizens in Mexico. We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death.”

Some speculate that the deaths could have been due to carbon monoxide poisoning, which has been the cause of previous deaths of Americans in the country, according to WTKR. While encouraged, landlords are not required to place carbon monoxide detectors within their properties.
