Border Patrol agent shot ahead of Biden border visit to El Paso

A Border Patrol agent assigned to its El Paso region was shot Thursday afternoon while attempting to make a traffic stop in New Mexico, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson.
The unnamed federal agent is in stable condition and had been wearing body armor at the time of the incident, potentially saving the agent’s life, according to two federal police officials familiar with details of the incident.

The shooting occurred near Lordsburg, New Mexico, a small remote town roughly 90 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
The southern border is divided into nine regions by the Border Patrol. The El Paso region includes borderland in West Texas and across New Mexico.

The shooting comes three days ahead of President Joe Biden’s visit to El Paso, Texas, where illegal immigration arrests surged through the fall and early winter.
