Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said too many of those entering public service, particularly government, are in it for the wrong reasons.

ā€œWe have too many who are focused on serving themselves, serving their own selfish ambitions, and abusing those positions of power and responsibility,ā€ Gabbard told Fox Newsā€™s Trey Gowdy.

Gabbard suggested ā€œvery practical changesā€ be made in Congress, allowing for a more even spread of power.

ā€œTake the power out of the hands of the less-than-six-people who really make the decisions in that body and actually empower every single member of Congress for the job that theyā€™ve been hired to do,ā€ Gabbard said, noting they were elected ā€œto represent those whoā€™ve sent them to Washington to be their voice and to be able to cast their vote based on their conscience and have a say in what bills come to the floor.ā€

Gabbard added that such changes would allow for more work in Washington, D.C., to be accomplished ā€” rather than doing ā€œwhatever the party boss wants.ā€

She also noted that respect has to be at the center of social interactions, allowing people ā€œto disagree without being disagreeable, find those areas of common ground, and move forward together.ā€

ā€œIf we share that same objective and outcome of working for the best interest of the American people, for this country, for each other,ā€ Gabbard said, ā€œthen thatā€™s how we can make real progress and bring the civility back, respect back to our society.ā€
