Pete Rose bet on baseball again. This time, however, it was legal.
As sports betting became legal in Ohio at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day, the 81-year-old Major League Baseball all-time hits leader placed Ohio’s first sports bet and chose the Reds to win the World Series.
“I don’t know a damn thing about odds,” Rose said after placing the bet at the Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati Sportsbook. “Go Reds! Go Bengals!”

Rose received a lifetime ban from the MLB for betting on baseball games during his playing and managerial days with the Cincinnati Reds. He has unsuccessfully asked to be reinstated four times, including his most recent attempt in 2020.
Rose recently asked MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to place him back on the eligible list for Hall of Fame consideration.
“I have apologized many times, both for betting on baseball games while managing the Cincinnati Reds and then for denying that I did,” Rose wrote. “I am writing today for three reasons. First, because at my age I want to be 100% sure that you understand how much I mean it when I say that I’m sorry. Second, to ask for your forgiveness. And third, because I still think every day about what it would mean to be considered for the Hall of Fame.”

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed the legislation making sports betting legal in December 2021.
