Tacos to-go only

The most important problem in most cities right now is crime. That is to be expected when you can’t even enjoy tacos in peace.

Oakland is one of those cities synonymous with crime. Couple that with a pro-criminal district attorney who does not think doing her job of putting criminals behind bars affects criminals committing crimes, and you have a less-than-ideal situation that degrades the quality of life and the health of communities, along with getting people hurt.

Fast-food restaurants are the canaries in the coal mine in Oakland, and those canaries are dying. Taco Bell locations in Oakland are now closing their dining rooms and shifting to drive-thru only. Just one Taco Bell in the city still offers indoor service, but, like the others, you can no longer pay with cash. As it turns out, restaurants do not like being robbed (and putting their employees in danger) on a regular basis. If criminals are here to stay, cash and indoor dining are not.

This is not even the first time that Oakland’s tolerance of crime has made getting fast food more difficult. In-N-Out announced it was closing its only Oakland location even though it was profitable (it is In-N-Out, after all) because of crime around where it is located near the Oakland International Airport. Rental car companies have told flyers not to fill up at gas stations near the airport for their own safety.

You can’t get gas, and you can’t sit down and eat tacos, but you can kill a toddler in a gang shootout and know that the district attorney will try to get you off without jail time. What more could you ask for in Oakland, other than not being worried about being robbed while trying to grab a bite to eat?
