Super Tuesday: Phillips congratulates ‘uncommitted’ for success among Democratic ‘loyalists’ amid delegate shutout

.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), in a social media post tinged with disappointment, congratulated President Joe Biden, Marianne Williamson, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, and “uncommitted” for appealing more to Democrats as Super Tuesday results rolled in.

“Congratulations to Joe Biden, Uncommitted, Marianne Williamson, and Nikki Haley for demonstrating more appeal to Democratic Party loyalists than me,” Phillips wrote on X.

Multiple Super Tuesday states have an “uncommitted” option or a similarly worded box on their presidential ballots. Last week, over 100,000 Michigan Democratic primary voters selected “uncommitted” in protest of Biden’s response to Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza. Williamson, who had suspended her campaign but then jumped back into the race, came in third, followed by Phillips in last place.

The national “Abandon Biden” campaign, led by Muslim leaders, pushed Democratic voters to cast their ballots for “uncommitted.”

Phillips lost to Biden in his home state of Minnesota on Tuesday evening. The Associated Press called the race 24 minutes after the polls closed at 9 p.m. Eastern time. By 9:52 p.m., Biden had 72.8% of the vote compared to Phillips’s 9.1%. “Uncommitted” gathered about 15.4% of the vote, with 19% of votes counted. Phillips, who launched his presidential bid to unseat the president in October, has yet to win any Democratic delegates.

On Tuesday, Phillips said he’ll be “making decisions” about his Democratic presidential campaign in the days ahead, urging a poll to show a head-to-head matchup against Trump.

“As the only candidate not losing to Donald Trump in any poll, I’m grateful for the beautifully orchestrated outpouring of wishes to end my mission to ensure his defeat,” Phillips posted on X prior to Minnesota being called. “I’m touched by the thoughtfulness, and will be making decisions over the coming days about how we can best fulfill that objective.”
