“The walls in Dr. Anthony S. Fauci’s home office are adorned with portraits of him, drawn and painted by some of his many fans.”

That is the opening line of Sheryl Gay Stolberg’s interview with Fauci at the New York Times. Stolberg says that Fauci was a “little uncomfortable” with people knowing this because the “far right” “attacked” him as an “egomaniac.” According to Stolberg, “it was a revealing glimpse into the psyche of America’s most loved and hated doctor.”

You could say that again.

FAUCI SUGGESTED FBI BE WARNED ABOUT POSSIBLE LAB LEAK BEFORE HE DISMISSED HYPOTHESIS

Everything about Fauci is a damning indictment of our public health bureaucracy. The fact that any health bureaucrat has “fans” is itself outrageous; the fact that he displays multiple portraits of himself drawn by those fans (along with bobbleheads of himself) in his home office is a testament to his narcissism. That narcissism saw Fauci declare himself inseparable from the very concept of science during the pandemic. “If you are trying to get at me as a public health official and a scientist, you’re really attacking, not only Dr. Anthony Fauci, you’re attacking science,” Fauci said.

And yet the science formerly known as Fauci was wrong throughout the pandemic. Repeatedly. Fauci gave cover to those promoting school closures despite all available evidence that schools should remain open. As recently as last month, Fauci still suggested that school closures should be happening in some areas of the country. He was wrong about what would happen when Texas lifted its mask mandate and wrong that New York handled the virus well when then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo was infecting nursing homes and covering it up.

He also lied throughout the pandemic. Repeatedly. He claimed he had nothing to do with school closures despite encouraging them based on “community spread.” He lied about the efficacy of masks, and he lied when he said his own mask-wearing despite being vaccinated was not mere “theater.” We know those two were lies because he later admitted they were. He also downplayed the possibility that the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and then claimed he never did such a thing.

Worst of all, though, is the narcissism. Fauci has never acknowledged in any real way the failures of the public health bureaucracy on a massive scale during the pandemic. He has never acknowledged that it was the conflicting, contradictory, and anti-science mandates and guidance from public health officials that led to people distrusting public health officials. That includes Fauci’s own failures: the contradictions, the incorrect predictions, the lies, and the obsession with making everything about him.

Fauci’s idea of “the science” was whatever confirmed his worldview and his outlook that the only way to stop the virus ever was to shut things down, regardless of the data. He let the publicity and power go to his head, resulting in a country that tore itself apart over COVID, the trust of public health officials in shatters, and a home office that functions as a shrine to himself.
