Two resolutions reportedly being proposed by Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour would prevent funds from being used for former President Donald Trump‘s legal fees, along with keeping the RNC neutral throughout the primary.
The pair of resolutions come ahead of the RNC’s meeting next month, where a new slate of Trump-backed candidates is expected to be elected to lead the committee. One of the two resolutions, both obtained by the Dispatch, would recommit the RNC to neutrality until a candidate has amassed the necessary 1,215 required delegates and would prevent current campaign staff from joining RNC leadership until a candidate has reached the threshold.
“RESOLVED, That the Republican National Committee and its leadership will stay neutral throughout the
Presidential primary and not take on additional staff from any of the active Presidential campaigns until
a nominee is clearly determined by reaching 1,215 delegates,” the draft resolution said, per the outlet.
Trump’s slate of endorsements for RNC leadership includes his co-campaign manager Chris LaCivita, who the former president has endorsed to be the committee’s COO. The other picks by Trump include North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley for chairman and his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, for co-chairwoman.
The other resolution obtained by the Dispatch would affirm that the RNC “will not pay the legal bills of any of our candidates for any federal or state office, but will focus our spending on efforts directly related to the 2024 election cycle.”
In response to the “absurd” proposals, LaCivita declared Saturday that the primary was “over” and argued efforts to delay defeating President Joe Biden and working to win in November would assist the “destruction of our nation.”
“The primary is over, and it is the RNC’s sole responsibility to defeat Joe Biden and win back the White House. Efforts to delay that assist Joe Biden in the destruction of our nation. Republicans cannot stand on the sidelines and allow this to happen,” LaCivita said in a statement.
LaCivita said on Friday to NBC News that the RNC would not use funds to pay for Trump’s legal fees.

The RNC’s next meeting is scheduled for March 7-9. McDaniel has not announced her intention to resign, but rumors have suggested she may step down after the GOP’s South Carolina presidential primary — which happened on Saturday.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the RNC and Barbour for comment.
