Tuberville turns Democratic attacks on Trump against Biden: ‘Trying to stay in there just so he can stay out of jail’

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) argued that President Joe Biden is only running for reelection so that he can “stay out of jail.”

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Tuberville predicted that Biden would drop out of the race within a few months. His only reason for staying in the race for so long, he speculated, was in order to avoid jail time.

“You know, I thought about three months ago, four months ago, I thought he probably would make it. But to see it decline over the last few months, I don’t think he’ll make it,” he said when asked whether he believed Biden would be the Democratic nominee come November. “I just watched him yesterday walking on a tarmac in L.A. with Nancy Pelosi, shuffling his feet, looking at the ground. I mean, he, you know, we got to have some leadership in this country.”

“I don’t know what they’re going to do, but President Trump’s going to win anyway,” the Alabama Republican continued. “But I think they’ll change probably around convention time, move somebody in to try to get President Trump a run for his money. But Joe Biden, he can’t win. He’s trying to stay in there just so he can stay out of jail, to be honest with you.”

The move is an inversion of the common Democratic attack that Trump is only running to avoid going to prison. The former president has been indicted four times, twice by Democratic district attorneys and twice by the Justice Department.

Biden has faced scrutiny over foreign business dealings during his time as vice president and after. Investigations into his business dealings, usually revolving around his son Hunter Biden have been undertaken after Republicans seized control of the House in 2023.

Recently, his brother James Biden has been interrogated by Congress over foreign business dealings involving the president.

Tuberville declared Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) the “heir apparent” of the nomination if Biden steps down.
