Today is Presidents Day, a holiday originally established to honor President George Washington’s birthday. Later, it was decided it would become a holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February to commemorate the birthdays of the aforementioned Washington and President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12. Both birthdays, as well as the Presidents Day holiday itself, enjoyed more cultural relevance with previous generations when the culture of this country embraced honoring its Founding Fathers instead of demonizing them.
Today, Presidents Day is arguably an afterthought, with many companies and institutions no longer acknowledging it or considering it worthy of a holiday. For example, while listening to a sports radio talk show on Philadelphia’s Sportsradio WIP this morning, host Tom Kelly referred to Presidents Day as a “phony holiday.” His co-host, Al Mogranti, diminished the day for “sales” at stores to get discounts on products such as refrigerators.
“Let’s be honest, and I’m glad everybody’s off today … but Presidents Day is kind of a phony holiday, right?” Kelly said. “Like, why do people have off for Presidents Day? What exactly are we celebrating?”
While no one ever said sports radio talk show hosts were intelligent, and the comments of Kelly and Morganti arguably prove this, I was still taken aback by their dismissive attitude. I was offended. Their remarks were idiotic. However, their words are also indicative of the cultural rot, lack of patriotism, and anti-American values that have plagued this country in recent decades. We no longer look to honor the people who worked, sacrificed, and fought to give us this country. Instead, we do everything possible to find ways to dishonor, disrespect, and spit on them.
But Presidents Day is a holiday worth celebrating and honoring, even in its contemporary evolution from a day to honor Washington and Lincoln to a day to honor all presidents. What dunderheads and dunces like the hosts mentioned above don’t understand is that if not for people like Washington and Lincoln, we wouldn’t have the country we have today with the liberties and freedoms we enjoy. And, as two people whose careers rely on the freedom of speech, you would think they would be more grateful.
But they are not alone in their ignorance. The country was better when it honored its Founding Fathers. The contemporary Bolshevism that dominates left-wing politics that seeks to delegitimize the nation and its founders is a cultural trend that must be stopped. It’s created an environment that encourages the country to hate its founders and its past instead of recognizing its greatness.
The contemporary Bolsheviks and diversity, equity, and inclusion Democrats want to eliminate people like Washington and Lincoln from our society and, arguably, all white men involved with the nation’s origins. They are the ones who facilitated the devaluing of holidays such as Presidents Day and such acts of anti-Americanism. They are the reasons there are legitimate efforts to remove statues of Washington and Jefferson.
The patriots in this country must not surrender to the Left. Our nation’s heritage is one worth honoring. Our nation’s history is one worth celebrating. Historical figures such as Washington and Lincoln are two of the most influential people in world history. Yet, in their own country, their legacies are under attack. We must have an American patriotic renaissance; it can start with remembering that Presidents Day is worth celebrating and honoring.
