Congressional Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Tuesday night, as the Washington Examiner’s Anna Giaritelli previously reported. In a historic vote, and by the slimmest of margins, 214-213, the House approved two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas: failing to detain illegal immigrants trying to enter the country while they wait for court proceedings and failing to “maintain operational control of the border.” Mayorkas becomes the first sitting member of a president’s Cabinet (and just the second overall) ever to be impeached.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) was one of the pioneers in trying to hold the Biden administration accountable for the border crisis. She took a firm stand in 2023 and introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden because of the border crisis, for which his decisions, rhetoric, and policies are largely to blame. Next to her staunch defense of the Second Amendment, working to ensure the border is secure has been one of Boebert’s most passionate pursuits. Suffice it to say, she applauded today’s impeachment.
“It took longer than it needed to, but House Republicans have finally stood up for the American people and sent a clear message to Mayorkas and the Biden administration: If you maliciously fail to secure our borders, you will be held accountable, and you will be impeached,” Boebert told me.
As such, the impeachment of Mayorkas is arguably a badge of honor for Boebert. After her reelection in 2022, Boebert vowed to hold Mayorkas accountable for failing to do his job. And, unlike many of her congressional colleagues, her actions spoke as loudly as her words on the Biden administration’s border failures.
“Impeaching Joe Biden and Alejandro Mayorkas sets a new and much-needed precedent of bad Swamp actors actually being held accountable for their scandals and dereliction of duty, which is why I introduced articles of impeachment against Biden last year and will vote to impeach Mayorkas for their failures on the Southern border,” Boebert told me earlier this month before the first vote to impeach Mayorkas. “The American people didn’t give us the House majority for us to sit on the sidelines; they gave us the majority to act. No more excuses, no more wasting time. Impeach Biden and Mayorkas now.”
Last week’s vote to impeach Mayorkas was a setback for House Republicans. However, their refusal to give up should be celebrated. Something needed to be done; the record number of illegal immigrants trying to enter the country had risen to levels too high to continue to ignore. Boebert was determined to use her position in Congress to help protect the border.
Consider the damage that Biden has caused regarding illegal immigration. Even the Washington Post could not hide the fact that illegal border crossings have surged and reached unsustainable levels.
“The number of people taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol has reached the highest levels in the agency’s 100-year history under Biden, averaging 2 million per year,” read an article in the Washington Post.
Furthermore, with Mayorkas on record for repeatedly suggesting the border was secure over the years, only to have Biden claim the exact opposite in recent weeks, Boebert ramped up her efforts against Mayorkas for failing to do his job. After taking the lead in 2023 to hold the Biden administration accountable, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say Tuesday’s vote was a feather in Boebert’s hat and an example of promises made and promises kept.

Asking her what was next, Boebert told me what the future held.
“Joe Biden, you’re up next,” Boebert said.
