The World Health Organization’s political corruption contributed to the global spread of COVID-19 and the global lack of preparedness to combat the virus. So why should we even humor a “pandemic treaty” from that useless organization?
Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) have already pointed out that this treaty, called the “Pandemic prevention, preparedness and response accord,” is another corrupt backdoor for partisan politics in the form of pushing abortion on demand.
Even if that were not included, though, the entire thing is a sham. The WHO swallowed Chinese propaganda wholesale, allowing COVID-19 to spread across the world with no warnings for other countries despite the fact that Taiwan was already blowing the whistle on the severity of the virus. Meanwhile, China remains a WHO member state with authority over this accord, while Taiwan is still dismissed and ignored by the organization.
There have been no serious reforms by the WHO to account for this failure, and an accord that China gets to have a say in won’t do that, either. There have been no mass firings in the WHO over the pandemic, no acknowledgment of Taiwan’s attempts to warn the world or an apology from WHO officials for shunning the country, and no real investigation into the origins of the virus. This accord will do nothing for global pandemic preparation. It is just another excuse for the United Nations to impose its power on countries around the world.

The good news is that the U.N. only has as much power as it is allowed to have. The bad news is that the United States continues to indulge an organization that is so blatantly corrupt and pro-authoritarian that it gives special treatment to China along with other human rights abusers. The U.S. should not just reject this accord. It should reject the WHO entirely and revoke any taxpayer funding that the organization receives as long as it remains an organ for Chinese propaganda.
The only treaty or accord that is necessary to help with global pandemic preparedness is one that forces China to allow for truly independent inspections and transparency. Given that that will never happen, the U.S. should not be engaging or participating in this farce or any other farce the WHO proposes without scrapping the entire structure that led to the COVID-19 pandemic in the first place.
