A woman in Boston is facing arson charges after she said the devil made her set her “haunted” apartment on fire Tuesday, authorities said.

Nikea Rivera, 45, is accused of setting her Dorchester triple-decker building on fire around 11 a.m., according to a report.

“I had to do it,” Rivera purportedly told police. “That house is haunted. I lit the house on fire.”

“The devil made me do it, there are ghosts in my house.”

Rivera started the two-alarm fire on the first floor, which quickly spread to all the floors of the wood-frame building, the report noted. At least two residents of the building had to be rescued, and at least one person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

“I’m sorry, I had to do it,” Rivera reportedly told a witness prior to fleeing the scene.

She was later taken into custody and admitted to igniting the blaze.

After she was charged, she was ordered to receive a mental evaluation at the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

“It’s fortunate that this woman’s actions did not result in any residents or responders being seriously injured or killed,” he said.

“Her statements are obviously disturbing and an immediate evaluation is the proper next step.”
