The real reason the Senate border deal collapsed

.

The narrative creation merchants are busy Thursday morning trying to cast the collapse of border security talks between Senate Republicans and the White House as a cynical ploy to help former President Donald Trump’s campaign at the expense of ending the border crisis.

Punchbowl News’s Jake Sherman is reporting that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) “told Republican senators that time had essentially run out on trying to craft a Ukraine-border package.”

“McConnell has now shifted blame on the border to Trump,” Sherman continued. “And Democrats get a very useful talking point — Republicans walked away from a bipartisan deal that could’ve helped stem the crisis at the border.”

It was very kind of Sherman to help Democrats create a new talking point. A completely false talking point. Nothing in the deal the Senate was negotiating with the White House would have “helped stem the crisis at the border.”

What the deal would have done is give Democratic-run cities and states billions of dollars to help house, clothe, feed, educate, and provide healthcare for the thousands of illegal immigrants busting their budgets.

Would this massive bailout have silenced Democratic mayor and governor complaints of President Joe Biden’s handling of the border? Absolutely.

Would it have done anything to “stem” the flow of migrants illegally crossing the border? Absolutely not. In fact, it would have made it worse.

The bill also would have included billions of dollars for the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Refugee Resettlement. These funds were not going to be spent denying migrants entrance into the United States. Every cent appropriated to these agencies would go to doing the exact opposite: processing illegal immigrants into the U.S. faster.

As this paper has been saying for months, those who support Ukraine funding made a huge mistake tying it to border security. Democrats simply are not in a place yet where they are willing to abandon their open borders priorities, not even if it means delaying funding for Ukraine.

Until Democrats actually want to stop the flow of illegal migrants crossing the border, instead of just easing the pain caused by migrants with federal bailouts, there will be no border deal.

People who want to aid Ukraine should accept this reality and change tactics accordingly.
