Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) received a fiery gift from her staff for Christmas.

The Republican governor got a Pulsefire LRT flamethrower that included South Dakota’s state motto, “Under God, the people rule,” engraved on top of it.

Video posted to Twitter shows Noem dressed in camouflage, trying out her new flamethrower.

“Perfect!” Noem said after a final spray.

In 2020, Noem posted a photo of herself to Instagram holding a flamethrower and asking if it was “too late to add something to my Christmas list.” The Instagram post went viral, garnering nearly 30,000 likes and 700 comments in 24 hours.

Noem spokesman Ian Fury said tax dollars were not used toward the purchase of the governor’s gift. According to Exothermic Technologies, a Pulsefire LRT can cost around $630.

Some criticized the gift on social media, complaining Noem was playing while Native Americans on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations were trapped without heat in a winter storm.

On Thursday, Noem declared a state of emergency and activated the state’s National Guard to deliver firewood from the Black Hills Forest Service to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

Fury said South Dakota’s Department of Public Safety had cleared roads on both reservations, worked to coordinate transportation for dialysis patients, assisted stranded drivers, and delivered food, firewood, and propane to various communities.
