Over the past few years, something has been made apparent that should give Republicans pause on any immigration compromise: Democrats cannot be trusted on the border, whether in their words or in their actions.
The latest example of this is from Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who accused Texas of letting three illegal immigrants, a woman and two children, drown and preventing Border Patrol agents from trying to save them. Texas has denied Border Patrol agents access across a stretch of the border since President Joe Biden has refused to do his job and enforce immigration law, and Cuellar’s accusation was clearly emotional blackmail to try and force Texas to back down.
Cuellar’s accusation was also false. Biden’s Justice Department ended up acknowledging that the illegal immigrants had already died before Border Patrol agents had even reached out to Texas. Both Cuellar and Biden’s Homeland Security Department accused Texas of getting a woman and two children killed, and it was false. In fact, if anyone shoulders the blame, it would be Biden’s Homeland Security Department, which has encouraged hundreds of thousands to cross the border every month.
This isn’t the first time this has happened, either. Back in September 2021, an adviser to failed Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro accused Border Patrol agents of whipping illegal immigrants. Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas immediately condemned the agents and banned them from using horses on the border, only for them to quietly clear them half a year later.

In both cases, Democrats either lied or recklessly made accusations with no facts in order to smear people who were trying to secure the border. Liberal media jumped on both claims as well to bolster the accusations and pressure people to stand down, with the intended result of making it easier for illegal immigrants to cross the border. Combine that with Biden making it easier for illegal immigrants to cross the border and Mayorkas asserting that there was no border crisis as Texas border towns, and now Democratic “sanctuary” cities, have been overwhelmed by the arrivals, and it is clear: Democrats cannot be trusted on the border.
Republicans must remember that in any “negotiation” in Congress. At best, Democrats are just so stunningly incompetent on this issue that they have no idea what is going on and no idea of how to fix it. At worst, they are lobbing untrue smears designed to pressure people into allowing more illegal immigrants into the country while inviting them in by promising them “sanctuary.” They cannot be trusted in any negotiation to do anything but make it more difficult to secure the border and solve this crisis.
