The View downplays ‘loser’ Trump’s landslide Iowa caucus win

.

The View co-hosts wondered on Tuesday why voters in the Iowa caucuses would want to support former President Donald Trump, who secured a decisive victory Monday evening.

The former president earned 51% of the vote in the state caucuses, with some arguing that the victory makes Trump the likely 2024 presidential nominee for the Republican Party. Joy Behar, one of the co-hosts, wondered why these voters would continue to support Trump in the wake of his mounting troubles, including 91 indictments.

“But the main thing I see, he’s a loser, he keeps losing,” Behar said. “So why do they keep throwing their weight behind a loser, and now Chris Christie told us that he is sure that Trump would lose in the general. Should he have that kind of confidence when these people are putting themselves behind this dictator wannabe and a loser at the same time?”

Fellow co-host Sunny Hostin noted that Trump performed very well with evangelical voters, and also performed better than expected with college-educated voters. Jonathan Karl, ABC News’s chief White House correspondent, suggested that Trump’s performance on Monday night stems from the Republican Party becoming more supportive of “blue-collar” workers, noting that Trump has earned more support from Hispanic and black voters than Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), the Republican presidential candidate in 2012.

Whoopi Goldberg, another co-host, noted that the results seem “par for the course” since it is still early in the 2024 election season. She also suggested that voters in the audience and watching at home should not get “suckered” when looking at the results of the 2024 general election.

“This is your election,” Goldberg said. “We can’t tell you who to vote for. We’re just telling you what we’re seeing.”

Following Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses, billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy announced that he would suspend his 2024 presidential bid and endorse Trump. Ramaswamy’s endorsement was given only a day after Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), another former 2024 presidential candidate, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) endorsed the former president.

The next state caucuses will be held in New Hampshire, where Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) has endorsed former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has stated he will not withdraw from the primary race even though he did not win in Iowa.
