A Detroit tow truck driver shot and killed an armed robber on Monday.

The Detroit Police Department said the alleged armed robber was targeting the tow truck driver without realizing he had a concealed pistol license.

The driver was reportedly driving a tow truck labeled T.K. Junk Car Removal on the 15400 block of Young Street on Detroit’s east side.

“I heard multiple gunshots, around six to eight,” a neighbor told a local outlet. “You have to get these crooks off the street one way or another.”

The suspected robber was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Nearby towing companies said the altercation is a sobering reminder of the dangers of the job.

“It is all about safety and going home at the end of your shift,” said Lenny Baldwin, owner of U Win Towing, noting that he practices shooting at the gun range. “It worries me every day, and my drivers know that.”

Bill Kucyk, a lawyer and owner of Action Impact Firearms and Training Centers, said few insurance companies will cover tow truck drivers’ civil liability.

“That is why we promote education,” Kucyk said. “If you are in an occupation where your life is at risk, I encourage you to take whatever steps you need to to protect yourself.”

The Detroit Police Department said it will hand the investigation over to the Wayne County prosecutor for review. There was no indication that the tow truck driver would face impending charges.
