Trump’s NFTs aren’t the only bad political Christmas presents

Trump’s NFTs aren’t the only bad political Christmas presents

Do you want to give a lousy Christmas present this year? Fear not, because politicians can help make that possible. So, instead of giving people thoughtful presents and supporting small businesses, you can pump a politician’s ego with overpriced gifts.

Former President Donald Trump is arguably the worst offender here. He did some great things as president, but now, he’s ripping off his supporters by charging them $99 for nonfungible tokens, or NFTs. They’re poorly Photoshopped cartoons of Trump trying to make him look cool.

Unfortunately for Trump’s audience, NFTs lack any real-world use or value. Demand drives their value. Eventually, if demand dries up, NFTs lose their worth. Plus, anyone can save these pictures without paying for them if, for some strange reason, they want to see them.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) is similarly guilty of bad taste. Her campaign store sells $28 shirts that cross out “Happy Holidays” and say “Merry Christmas” in bigger letters below it. The back of the shirt also says “Lauren Boebert.”

She’s right that there is nothing wrong with saying “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays.” Christmas is a major holiday that most Americans celebrate, while Hanukkah is not a significant Jewish holiday and virtually no black Americans celebrate Kwanzaa.

However, do we need to wear shirts belittling people who say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”? The people saying it want to be nice, even if they come across as too politically correct. (Besides, the unpopular representative likely needs the votes of the politically correct if she wants to win reelection in 2024.)

The Democratic Party, of course, is also hawking gifts that no one needs. The party sold out of its $46 bronze “holiday ornament” that features a donkey and the names of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Democrats also sell gift wrap featuring donkeys and “holiday card” 10-packs.

Someone should probably tell the Democrats that ornaments generally go on Christmas trees, not holiday trees.

Sen.-elect John Fetterman (D-PA) is also selling Christmas gear without using the word Christmas. Fetterman’s campaign is offering ugly Christmas sweatshirts (like sweaters, but worse) for $50 and Christmas ornaments for $25. However, Fetterman’s website refers to them as “Fetterman Ugly Sweatshirt” and “Fetterman Ornament,” leaving Christmas out of it.

Since Fetterman supports the type of big government spending that leads to runaway inflation and people buying fewer Christmas presents, people probably shouldn’t purchase gifts supporting his campaign.

Christmas is a time when people can give each other great gifts. Unfortunately, politicians and their parties aren’t offering them.
