WATCH: Meteor flashes across Alaskan sky in last meteor shower of 2022

The last meteor shower of 2022 is on display, and several Alaskans caught it flashing across the sky on video.

The light display comes as part of the Ursid meteor shower, which will be at its peak performance Thursday night into Friday morning, according to Space.com.

The video shows the meteor causing a fireball that ranged in color from blue and orange to white.

“At maximum activity this source normally adds 5-10 medium velocity meteors to the 15 or so that are normally seen each morning hour from dark sky sites,” the American Meteor Society said. “This year though, the earth passes close to several past trails of debris that closely follow the orbit of comet 8P/Tuttle.”

Visibility for the 2022 Ursid meteor shower is expected to be good as moonlight remains dim ahead of a new moon arriving Friday.

The meteor shower comes as Wednesday marked the winter solstice, the shortest day for Earth’s Northern Hemisphere.
