America is returning to the colonial era

Illegal immigrants are flooding into America faster than ever before. Dec. 5 set a record, with more than 12,000 encounters at the Mexican frontier. That would be 4.4 million annually, adding 1.3% to the population in just one year, if the pace stayed constant. It will obviously fluctuate, sometimes below that number, but there is every reason to expect record highs in the next 12 months.
President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party’s dominant leftists don’t simply not resist this inundation but positively want and encourage it. In this, they disdain public opinion. The president’s proposed immigration policy reforms would accelerate the influx rather than stanch it.

What’s going on? This question involves recognition of massive ideological inconsistency on the subject of colonization. In theory, at least, leftists hate colonialism more than anything else. But they are very selective and unprincipled about it and favor some colonizers just as much as they hate others.
Most universities offer courses in anti-colonialism and other variants of an obsessive, ever-expanding, assertive anti-racism agenda. Ever since Hamas slaughtered 1,200 innocents in Israel on Oct. 7, radicals have argued that resistance to “colonial occupation” justifies barbarism. They denounce Zionists as colonizers even though it was the Arabs who in 635 A.D. conquered what was originally, and is again, Israel during imperial Islam’s massive colonial expansion out of the Arabian Peninsula into the Middle East. It is amusing to twit the Left by pointing out that the Medieval crusades can be seen as defensive anti-colonial wars waged to retake land wrongly seized from Christendom by Muslim invaders.
But the Left dislikes colonization only when it’s perpetrated by disfavored people, notably white men (among whom they include Jews), which is why they regard America’s existence as a problem to be resolved rather than a fact to be celebrated. Colleges and other bastions of leftism routinely demand land acknowledgments from members of the guilty majority population, who are made to confess cringingly that this nation was stolen from the Indians (although they never actually say “Indians”). They would never demand such acknowledgments if Palestinians managed to seize Israel from the Jews who were there thousands of years earlier and longer than the Arabs. Perish the thought!
The Left’s capricious and dishonest application of the “colonial” label brings us back to the U.S. southern border. Biden and his radical wing treat demands for immigration control, which reflect the public will, as racist because the people irrupting into this country are disproportionately dark-skinned and thus members of a favored caste valorized by modish academic claptrap known as intersectionality.

As N.S. Lyons wrote in a witty and insightful recent essay, aggressive immigration is one of the techniques that colonizers use to undermine native culture. It is among several allied efforts to divide, deculture, and demoralize the host nation. Constant denigration of traditional history and inherited customs undermines self-confidence and produces confusion and submission. As Lyons says, it sounds familiar, right?
The modern colonial authorities in America are not part of a foreign force but the arrogant and out-of-touch leftists, who punish and suppress dissent and who now control nearly every major institution.
