Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) encouraged pressure to be put on the president of Harvard University to resign.

“I am for pressuring her to resign. I am glad this is all being highlighted… but what rock have folks been living under?” the Texas Republican said on Wednesday in response to a social media post by Harvard University attempting to explain Claudine Gay’s testimony before Congress.

He continued, “This is just one obvious example of what these ‘elite’ universities have become… will we stop giving them blank checks?! Will alumni stop giving them money?”

In a congressional hearing on Tuesday evening, Gay was one of the presidents of three of the top universities who was grilled over antisemitism and calls for genocide of Jewish people on college campuses since the Hamas Oct. 7 terrorist attacks.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) pressed Gay about Harvard University’s code of conduct and questioned the use of hateful speech on campus.

The New York Republican demanded to know what action will be taken against students who are “calling for the genocide of Jews on Harvard’s campus?”

When responding to Stefanik’s questions on the university’s rules for bullying and harassment, Gay said speech that qualifies as harassment “depends on the context.”

The Harvard president received blowback following her testimony. Harvard Hillel, the Jewish student organization, blasted her for refusing to “draw a line” on hateful antisemitic speech.

Gay attempted to spin the response to her testimony in a social media statement.

“There are some who have confused a right to free expression with the idea that Harvard will condone calls for violence against Jewish students,” she said. “Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic group are vile, they have no place at Harvard, and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account.”
