Disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is preparing his political comeback, which makes this as good a time as any to remind everyone that he got thousands of senior citizens killed during the pandemic and then tried to cover it up.

Cuomo is reportedly preparing to run for mayor of New York City if Mayor Eric Adams is forced out by a federal investigation into his campaign, “according to eight people who have talked to him or his inner circle.” Cuomo has been plotting his return to politics almost since he left office two years ago and evidently sees an opportunity if Adams does not (or can’t) run for reelection.

Cuomo, it should be remembered, was forced to resign after state Democrats threatened to impeach him for a series of sexual misconduct allegations. At the start of the pandemic, Cuomo ordered nursing homes to accept COVID-19-positive patients and prevented them from requiring negative tests for admission, despite the fact that the virus was most deadly to the elderly. A report found that some 6,327 COVID-positive admissions were linked to “possibly more than 1,000 additional resident deaths.”

The controversy didn’t end there, though. Cuomo’s administration had his initial executive order deleted and then tried artificially to lower the number of nursing home deaths by claiming that residents who were brought to the hospital and died there were hospital deaths, despite being infected at nursing homes to the point that they required hospitalization.

An audit of Cuomo’s Health Department found that it reclassified at least 4,100 nursing home deaths in its effort to protect Cuomo’s reputation and political prospects, underreporting nursing home deaths by as much as 50%. All of this while Cuomo was presenting himself as a hero in media appearance after media appearance while also working on a self-promotional book about “leadership lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

If anyone in American politics has disqualified themselves from holding any level of office anywhere, it would be Andrew Cuomo. He did untold damage to thousands of families with a terrible policy that everyone knew was terrible, then tried to cover it up while presenting himself as God’s gift to the country. If you think New York City’s decline is noticeable now, you can only imagine what would happen with an incompetent, destructive “leader” like Cuomo in charge.
