Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he would “love” to see Johnny Depp reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Bruckheimer, 79, said that while he can’t answer for Disney as to whether it would welcome back Depp following his recent defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, he certainly would as Pirates 6 continues to go through iterations.

“I would love to have him in the movie,” Bruckheimer told the Hollywood Reporter. “He’s a friend, a terrific actor, and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.”

Heard announced Monday that she would settle the defamation case against her and not pursue any further appeals.

While Depp’s return to the Pirates franchise has been rumored, with the actor saying his character would have to be killed off should he ever return, Bruckheimer denied that storyline possibility.

“You can’t. We tried to kill him,” Bruckheimer said. “It didn’t work.”

Bruckheimer also reflected on his career’s success, which recently saw Top Gun: Maverick become the world’s fifth top-grossing film of all time, raking in more than $1.4 billion.

“Tom said to me and to Paramount, ‘If we’re going to make a sequel to Top Gun, we’ve got to hit a bullet with a bullet.’ And that’s what he did,” Bruckheimer said.
