Why aren’t single liberal women finding marriageable men?

To read Anna Louie Sussman’s account of the modern dating scene, one would think the world is full of empathetic, open-minded single women desperately seeking Mr. Right from all walks of life, only to encounter a sea of cads, stretching from “alpha males” who “want to be challenged by work, not by their partners” to “polyamorous men” who claim “that their multiple attachments to women are all committed.”

And to be fair, unlike Sussman, I have been happily married for over 20 years and therefore haven’t dated since literally last century. Maybe all the single guys out there are as terrible as she claims.

DEPOPULATION IS A CHOICE

But the data sure do make it seem like single women today are a bit more picky than Sussman lets on.

For starters, as Sussman notes herself, the American Perspectives Survey recently found that while almost half of college-educated women said they were single because they couldn’t “find someone who meets their expectations,” only one-third of men said the same thing.

Single women today, especially liberal single women, are far more picky than anyone else when it comes to the politics of their potential partners as well. A different American Perspectives Survey from 2020 found that while 79% of Democratic women were unwilling to date someone with a different view of Trump, just 48% of Republican men said the same thing.

A Pew poll, also from 2020, found similar results, with more than 70% of Democrats saying they would not consider dating someone who voted for Trump, compared to 74% of Republicans who said they would absolutely date someone who voted for a Democrat.

Republican men may be closed-minded about other things, but when it comes to finding love, most are more than willing to give liberal women a try.

Unfortunately, it seems that liberal women’s unreasonably high standards for romantic partners continue well past dating and into married life. Of all genders and party affiliations, married Democratic women are the least likely (29%) to report being completely satisfied with their relationship. Republican men are the most likely to be completely satisfied by their marriage (46%), followed by Republican women (42%) and then Democratic men (36%).

Sussman implores us to take “the stories of single women seriously and not [treat] them as punchlines,” which is fine advice. My father died when I was young, and I know my mother met her share of cads before she found Mr. Right 2.0. A little compassion is in order. Maybe Sussman could spare some for all the single men out there whose only crime is voting for the wrong political party.
