Connecticut man charged with running $8.5 million mushroom factory in home

A man in Connecticut was taken into custody Thursday after allegedly maintaining a homemade psilocybin mushroom factory worth an estimated $8.5 million.
Weston Soule, 21, was arrested after authorities discovered a secret mushroom operation inside his Burlington home, according to a report citing Connecticut State Police.

Officers responded to the home at about 9 a.m. after receiving a tip from a caller, the Drug Enforcement Administration Hartford Task Force and detectives said.
Upon arriving at Soule’s home, authorities uncovered equipment for ventilation that matched that previously used in clandestine laboratories, the report noted.
A search warrant was soon obtained after Soule refused to consent to a search, and further investigation of a detached garage led detectives to find a grand mushroom-growing operation, according to the report.
The suspect initially maintained that the mushrooms were not illegal.
However, psilocybin mushrooms, commonly known as “magic mushrooms,” were found inside the home, police said.

The 21-year-old confessed that the mushrooms were psilocybin and was charged with operating a drug factory and possessing with the intent to sell/distribute narcotics, according to the report.
Soule was placed on a $250,000 cash/surety bond.
