Alex Murdaugh indicted on tax evasion charges by grand jury

Alex Murdaugh, who is accused of killing his wife and son, was indicted on nine counts of tax evasion by the South Carolina State Grand Jury on Friday.

Murdaugh, 54, faces more than 100 charges against him for various crimes during his career as a lawyer and outside the courtroom.

The South Carolina attorney general’s office alleges that from 2011 to 2019, Murdaugh made roughly $14 million from his attorney job but also stole nearly $7 million, which was allegedly intended for the law firm’s bank accounts.

Prosecutors in the case claim Murdaugh tried to evade $487,000 in state income taxes. Each of the nine counts is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Murdaugh is accused of killing his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, 52, and son Paul Murdaugh, 22, in June 2021 after the two were found dead near the family’s hunting estate. Cellphone footage shows the former lawyer was at the crime scene, and police officers who responded to the scene found blood on his clothes, according to investigators.

Alex Murdaugh has maintained his innocence and has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. The murder trial is currently scheduled to begin in January 2023.
