Outgoing Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) is being sued by his own lawyers over $193,000 in unpaid legal fees stemming from a legal challenge to his candidacy during the 2022 North Carolina primary.

The lawsuit, filed on Dec. 1, claims that Cawthorn failed to pay the Indiana-based Bopp Law Firm $193,296.85 in fees after hiring it to fight a suit from North Carolina voters that attempted to disqualify him from office over his participation in a Stop the Steal rally on Jan. 6, the Hill reported. The firm convinced a U.S. district judge to rule in Cawthorn’s favor but was never paid for its services.

Documents filed in court, obtained by WCNC, appear to show the fees accumulated over the course of six months. Upon reaching out to the firm, founder James Bopp Jr. told the outlet that Cawthorn reached out and promised to pay the amount after the firm had filed the suit, which he is hopeful about.

Cawthorn apparently vacated his Washington office in mid-November, the Asheville City Times found, leaving him unable to be reached.

The North Carolina representative has faced a difficult final year in office, beset by scandals and several legal issues, in addition to losing his primary. Most recently, he was ordered by the House Ethics Committee to pay nearly $15,000 in fines over his involvement in a “pump-and-dump” cryptocurrency scheme.
