Yes, Byron Donalds should be the next speaker of the House

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) declared his candidacy for speaker of the House Friday evening, as the Washington Examiner reported.
It was a bold declaration after Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) could not secure enough votes to proceed with his candidacy. With Jordan essentially done as speaker, all Republicans should have just one thing to say about Donalds’s candidacy: It’s about time.
SPEAKERLESS HOUSE: THE LONGEST THE HOUSE HAS GONE WITHOUT A SPEAKER
“Tonight I am announcing my candidacy for speaker of the US House of Representatives,” Donalds posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
I first wrote that Donalds should be the House speaker back in January. Apparently, I was ahead of the curve. Then, after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted earlier this month, eleven days ago, once again, I wrote that Donalds should be the speaker. I will say now what I said then: he is “everything any Republican could ever want in a politician, let alone speaker of the House.”
But don’t take my word for it. Consider what Donalds had to say.
“My sole focus will be securing our border, funding our government responsibly, advancing a conservative vision for the House of Representatives and the American people, and expanding our Republican majority,” he said.
Notice what he said, “A conservative vision for the House of Representatives.” What a refreshing change of pace to see a candidate for House speaker acknowledge and embrace being a conservative instead of trying to hide from that fact. He is a social and fiscal conservative who, among other things, champions vast reforms in one of the country’s most important areas: the education system. Furthermore, Donalds’s vision would not only be great for conservatives and Republicans, but it would benefit the entire nation.
Last but not least, in the era of identity politics where “diversity” and “representation” matter, Republicans have the opportunity to elect the first black speaker of the House in the nation’s history. It’s a fact that Donalds mentioned in his post on X and one that I wrote about back in January. Electing Donalds would be the next logical step of the original political party that pioneered racial equality and civil rights.
Some may be skeptical, and many will cite that Donalds has only been in the House since 2020. This is true. However, consider former President Barack Obama. While some detractors may point to Donalds’s relative inexperience, it’s worth noting that Obama hadn’t even served half his term as senator (most of which he spent campaigning) when he was elected as the 44th president of the United States. Moreover, if government experience were really instrumental to successful leadership, Joe Biden would be much better at his job.

Donalds is young, bright, energetic, and the kind of vibrant change Republicans need in the House. Furthermore, Donalds has shown he won’t shy away from a challenge. During his time in office, he has already stood up to challenges from the more radical, rogue, socialist wing of the Democratic Party, such as Rep. Cori “Private Security for me, Defund the Police for Thee” Bush (D-MO) and Rep. Jamaal “Fire Alarm” Bowman (D-NY). He has demonstrated he won’t be bullied by the aggressive tactics of Democrats in the House who try to shame and bully conservatives into getting their way.
In these perilous times, Donalds is the kind of change that Republicans need. He has shown he won’t shy away from doing what is right. It’s time Republicans give Byron Donalds a chance.
