House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) blamed massive losses by Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections on a “white male thing” when speaking with then-President Barack Obama.

The phone call between Pelosi and Obama was featured in an HBO documentary Pelosi in the House, which is directed by Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra.

“Our members have said they don’t regret their healthcare bill right across the board. Even if we never passed healthcare reform, we were still going to lose this election because of 9.5% unemployment. ‘Cause it wasn’t about that. It was about jobs,” Pelosi said to Obama in a 2010 phone call. “The white male thing is just, that’s a dominant thing. When they don’t have a job, they get in a mood.”

The call from Nov. 2, 2010, came after Democrats suffered historic losses in the House of Representatives, losing a net total of 63 seats to the GOP. It was the largest gain in the House for the GOP since the 1938 elections and the largest swing in seats since the 1948 elections.

Pelosi lost her position as House speaker following the 2010 elections but regained the position following the 2018 elections, when Democrats retook control of the House. Last month, Pelosi announced she would not seek leadership in the next Congress, and the Democrats will be relegated to the minority party in the House.
