Steering panel recommends Raskin serve as top Democrat on Oversight Committee

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) was recommended by the House Democratic Steering Committee to become the ranking member on the House Oversight and Reform Committee in the next Congress on Wednesday.
Raskin saw a rise in his national profile during the second impeachment of former President Donald Trump, with the Maryland Democrat playing a prominent role in the proceedings, serving as the lead impeachment manager. He has also had a key role in the Jan. 6 select committee’s investigation into the riot at the Capitol.

Raskin surpassed two Democratic lawmakers, Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), who outrank him in seniority on the panel.
Seniority has traditionally been seen as a key component in Democratic steering members’ decision-making process while determining who will lead panels.
Raskin will be tasked with leading the charge on pushing back against the GOP’s investigations into the Biden administration, with Chairman-elect Jamie Comer (R-KY) asserting he plans to launch a slew of inquiries on topics ranging from Hunter Biden to the administration’s handling of the withdrawal of troops in Afghanistan.
Raskin will be replacing outgoing Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who lost her primary against House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) after the two senior lawmakers’ seats were drawn together under new redistricting maps.

The full caucus is expected to vote to ratify the steering committee’s recommendations next week.
In addition to the Oversight and Jan. 6 select committee, Raskin also currently sits on the House Judiciary Committee, House Rules Committee, and the House Administration Committee.
