Trump sues Christopher Steele over dossier entry that nearly sunk his political future

Former President Donald Trump is suing former British spy Christopher Steele, the author of a disproven dossier that caused him significant political trouble.
Steele, who formerly ran British intelligence’s Russia desk, was the man behind the dossier, funded indirectly by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, which alleged widespread cooperation between the Russian government and Trump’s campaign.

The dossier put forward the claim that the Russian government was in possession of sexually compromising material on Trump, including a tape in which prostitutes urinated on a bed in a hotel where former President Barack Obama had stayed.
Trump attorney Tim Lowles announced that the former president is bringing a data protection claim in the United Kingdom against Steele and his consulting firm, Orbis Business Intelligence.
“Proceedings have been issued on behalf of President Donald J. Trump against Orbis Business Intelligence Limited. The claim relates to breaches of UK Data Protection law arising from the inaccurate processing of the President’s personal data by Orbis following the publication of the false ‘Steele Dossier,’” Lowles said, per the New York Post.
“The President’s claim seeks remedies including that the inaccurate data contained within the Steele Dossier be erased or rectified together with the payment of damages,” he added.

A two-day hearing for the case is slated to begin Oct. 16, according to the Independent.
The claims in the Steele dossier plagued the Trump administration for its entire duration and contributed significantly to intelligence and congressional investigations into alleged Russian collusion from Trump and his campaign. Later investigations found the claims in the dossier to have no merit.
