Parents still have the right to be parents in California, despite both the radical Left and the transgender lobby’s egregious efforts to legislate otherwise. A piece of legislation that made the rights of parents secondary to adherence to gender ideology was too extreme even for Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA). He vetoed a bill that would have mandated judges to prioritize gender identity and parents’ affirmation of it in custody cases. Vetoes such as this probably wouldn’t occur — meaning laws like this might actually go into effect — if groups such as Moms for Liberty and other parents did not challenge left-wing brainwashing in schools.

AB 957 was a bill in the California Assembly that sought to amend the state’s family code and institute gender identity at the core of custody decisions of transgender children. It would have forced the courts to “include a parent’s affirmation of the child’s gender identity or gender expression as part of the health, safety, and welfare of the child.” The bill would have usurped parental authority at the expense of transgenderism and the unreliable whims of an adolescent.

HIJACKING HIGHER EDUCATION: THE IDEOLOGICAL CAPTURE OF UNIVERSITIES

Consider the dangers of this bill and the horrors in the precedent it would have established if Newsom allowed it to be law. According to the text, judges would have the authority to declare child endangerment if a child’s parents failed to affirm a “child’s gender identity or gender expression.” Furthermore, AB 957 specified that affirmation wasn’t a universal application and involved “a range of actions” that would be “unique for each child, but in every case must promote the child’s overall health and well-being.” Parents were to be at the judicial mercy of the impulses of their children.

Fortunately, Newsom saw how destructive this was and showed an iota of common sense. For the moment, normalcy still stands as the rule of the land in custody decisions in the Golden State. However, groups such as Moms for Liberty and parents who decided to fight back against Democratic bureaucrats nationwide were the trailblazers here. They brought awareness to these issues and they are the people who are in the crosshairs of the Left’s culture and social justice lobby.

These mothers and fathers are regularly threatened by the Left’s “big culture” lobby, suffering from harassment, intimidation, and every other tactic the Left has used over the last 120 years to impose its political will and agenda. The fact that Moms for Liberty and other parents taking a stand has mounted strategic offensives in the culture war frightens the Left. It’s why their rabid army of toxic activists consists of ideologically compromised advocates such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the useful idiots of transgender activists. Such groups fight to maintain the status quo and confront Moms for Liberty and other parents for freedom.

These parents expose the Left’s cultural totalitarianism to the entire country, directly threatening the Left’s vice-like grip on education. It’s precisely why the Left fears them so much. It’s also indicative of why the culture war is vital despite what prominent Republicans such as former House Speaker Paul Ryan have claimed.

Now, with the revelation that Newsom backed down, the Left’s anger will only increase. However, the traditional American culture is what must be protected at all costs. Culture dictates law. It always has and always will. Resistance against the Left made Newsom’s veto possible by showing there is a political price to pay for radical ideology. Nothing would have happened without parents’ resistance, and the aggressive, agenda-driven left-wingers would have won.

Activism works, and conservatives and Republicans must follow these brave parents who paved the way and continue challenging Democrats nationwide. There is still much work to be done, but fighting the culture war is worthwhile and imperative to the survival of our republic’s values.

Furthermore, Newsom’s veto is an example of why conservatives and Republicans must do more than just promote economic and fiscal policies. It’s not 1992 anymore and it’s stupid to think it’s just the economy that matters. The Left has been engaged in a culture war for decades, shoving their values and imposing their moralities on unsuspecting children in the nation’s education system. Newsom’s veto is an example of what good things can happen when the Right pushes back.
