Can Democrats distance themselves from Biden’s border disaster?

President Joe Bidens age might be his biggest political liability, but the crisis he created on the border is a close second, and it’s a liability that other Democrats are desperate to avoid.

“I was livid,” Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. said of the moment he read news reports that the Biden administration was considering Atlantic City as a possible destination for immigrants now overwhelming New York City.

“Y’all that know me know that I like a good fight,” Small continued. “Whether it’s the president of my own party or whomever, I’m always going to stand on the side of right.”

Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) was just as forceful in his rejection of Biden’s plans to move immigrants to his state. “I don’t see any scenario where we’re going to be able to take in a program in Atlantic City or frankly elsewhere in the state,” Murphy told a local television station.

Atlantic County Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick, who as recently as 2019 voted to make Atlantic County a sanctuary county, also attacked Biden’s migrant relocation plan, saying it would disrupt “the delicate balance we are currently striking in Atlantic County as we work to reinvent our economic path forward after years of lost jobs and shuttered businesses.”

Unlike most states that hold state elections in even-numbered years, New Jersey voters are going to the polls this November, and many Democrats are worried that voters will take their frustration with Biden’s border crisis out on them. Democrats hold a 25-15 edge in the New Jersey Senate and a 46-34 edge in the House, but Republicans have recently gained ground in the state, especially in Atlantic County, where Biden floated the possibility of moving New York City’s immigrants.

“Atlantic City has been a perennial dumping ground,” Small said. “I want everyone up here to keep up that same energy and stand and support Atlantic City as people continuously dump their less fortunate on the great city of Atlantic City.”

Republicans, for their part, rightly pointed out that the migrant crisis is a crisis entirely of the Democratic Party’s making.

“The issue of migrants, an out-of-control border, and the problems that are now emanating from sanctuary city policies are now inexorably tied to Democrats,” Republican Chris Russell told Politico. “This is a Democrat problem that they have, and they own it, lock, stock, and barrel.”

We’ll see if voters, or at least New Jersey voters, believe all Democrats should pay for Biden’s border crisis this November.
