The Republican Party has, for the most part, done a good job recruiting candidates for Senate races in 2024. But one clear dud is promising to stink up the Senate race in Arizona, and her name is Kari Lake.

Lake, in case you forgot, lost the race for governor in Arizona on the same ballot that other statewide and congressional Republicans won. She lost in such an embarrassing fashion that she could not admit that she lost and has instead gone on pretending that she won all along like a child playing make-believe (or an average Democratic presidential candidate). Now Lake has her eyes set on running for Senate.

In a poll from Noble Predictive Insights, Lake pulls just 25% in a three-way general election contest between Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and former Democrat turned independent incumbent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. More damning, that 25% puts Lake in third place behind both Gallego (34%) and Sinema (26%). Lake is running third in a three-way race against a Democrat and a Democrat in all but name.

Dig into the numbers and it just gets worse. Lake is only polling at 54% among Republicans in this hypothetical race and is a distant third among independents. It doesn’t get any better if Lake goes against Gallego head-to-head either, with Gallego holding a 10-percentage-point lead in that hypothetical. Arizona voters just don’t want her, which is why she lost less than a year ago the last time she faced them.

Lake will all but guarantee a Republican loss in the Arizona Senate race and almost certainly in any other statewide race she decides to run in. She was a dud as a candidate in the governor’s race who explicitly told a large chunk of Republicans not to vote for her, and since then, her reputation has only become that of a delusional sore loser. Everyone can see that — except the Republicans who would be dumb enough to nominate her again.
