Katie Porter is the worst

Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Porter sent letters to the executives of Intuit, H&R Block, the Free File Alliance, and American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights, seeking information specifics on the amount of money firms have made since being members of the Free File Alliance and information on the number of former government workers who’ve joined their firms in the past two years. If you want to know just how terrible our politics are, there are plenty of examples of toxic, obnoxious politicians to examine. None may be as awful as Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA).

In a fluff profile piece in the Washington Post about her run for Senate, Porter took a random broadside at a woman already serving in the Senate. “To me, equality is not electing Joni Ernst‚” she said of the Iowa Republican. “Like, that’s not helping.” Yes, it should come as no surprise that Porter thinks a female veteran who has raised the issue of sexual assault in the military is bad for “equality” simply because Ernst happens to be a Republican.

Who is good for equality, according to Porter? Why, Porter herself. Sure, she is a cookie-cutter upper-class white liberal who attended both Harvard and Yale, but Porter really thinks she is the best person for the job for black women. While Porter argues the Senate needs more black women, she is running against a black woman (Rep. Barbara Lee) in California. Porter thinks that she is better for black women than black women.

Don’t believe me? Here is what Porter said earlier this year: “I have a track record for fighting for the very kinds of issues that make a difference in the lives of black Americans and black communities. Black Americans do not get people helping them with issues like healthcare, with housing, with being cheated by scam artists, and those are some of the fights I’ve taken on.” (Emphasis added).

And when she isn’t whining about how hard her job is or saying that poor people need abortion because they don’t need more mouths to feed, Porter is allegedly foisting her toxicity on others. She’s been accused of making rude and racist comments to her own staff and of mocking people for reporting sexual harassment. (Perhaps that changes the context of saying that Ernst is “not helping” with equality). She was also accused by her ex-husband of verbal abuse and of burning his scalp during an argument.

In all, one thing is entirely clear: Porter is toxic, obnoxious, overly ambitious, and arrogant. She represents everything that is wrong with politics, down to the fact that she is a serious contender for a seat in the Senate. Katie Porter may manage to be the worst and most toxic person in a race that includes Rep. Adam Schiff, and yet she may be one year away from even more political power that she clearly does not deserve.

Our politics would be better without egotistical narcissists such as Porter, an elitist white woman who thinks that she is better for equality than black women and female veterans. And yet, if she manages to win the Senate race next year, we may be stuck with her for another 40 years. This is the political environment we have built for ourselves.
