The Left’s hypocritical outrage over Lauren Boebert

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) seemed to draw a wrath as powerful as a thousand suns last week when it was revealed she was kicked out of a performance of Beetlejuice at a Colorado theater because of rude behavior. After a video showed Boebert vaping, violating rules against using cameras and video during the show, and engaging in inappropriate behavior with her companion for the evening, the outrage against her grew even louder. The congresswoman messed up. But you don’t have to take my word for it; take Lauren Boebert’s word.

“The past few days have been difficult and humbling, and I’m truly sorry for the unwanted attention my Sunday evening in Denver has brought to the community,” an apology from Boebert read. “While none of my actions or words as a private citizen that night were intended to be malicious or meant to cause harm, the reality is they did, and I regret that.”

Boebert apologized and took responsibility for what happened. It was an error in judgment from a woman in the public eye as a congresswoman, targeted by the mainstream media because of her assertiveness in defending Republican cultural values, a mother of four children, and going through a divorce. Maybe the stress of all that caused her poor decisions that night. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time someone going through a divorce made regretful decisions.

“There’s no perfect blueprint for going through a public and difficult divorce, which over the past few months has made for a challenging personal time for me and my entire family,” Boebert stated in her apology. “I’ve tried to handle it with strength and grace as best I can, but I simply fell short of my values on Sunday. That’s unacceptable, and I’m sorry.”

Yes, criticisms against her have validity. Elected officials in Congress are held to higher standards — and should be. But it is those standards that Boebert admitted she failed to maintain. However, it’s also important to put those mistakes in perspective.

For example, while Boebert was a bit unruly and getting frisky with her date, she didn’t get drunk, drive a car into a lake, and leave a person to drown and die as former Sen. Ted Kennedy did. Nor did she have a mistress the way Kennedy did. Nor did she, after the aforementioned accident, lie about it, try to cover it up, and prevent the story from getting to the press.

And while the outraged are ready to burn Boebert at the stake for what happened in the theater, let’s not forget that Kenendy went on to serve in the Senate for another 40 years after this incident, ran for president, was beloved, respected, and considered an icon.

Additionally, it’s not as if Boebert cheated on her spouse with an intern half her age in the Oval Office. Nor was Boebert, after said affair, accused of rape, sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, and sexual assault like former President Bill Clinton. Nor was Boebert charged with perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from those events. And if one recalls, Bill Clinton served two terms as president and is also considered a Democratic icon.

Furthermore, look no further than last week’s revelations about the behavior Democrats support. While Democrats were condemning Boebert, many also supported a political candidate in Virginia who was doing porn. Susanna Gibson solicited money while performing sex acts with her husband online. Nothing Boebert did was even close to this. Yet many Democrats defended Gibson and labeled criticisms against her sexist and an invasion of privacy.

There are also other controversies with Democratic politicians who were largely ignored and didn’t impact their reelection efforts. For example, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was accused of patronizing teenage prostitutes. Former Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry was caught smoking crack cocaine and propositioning a “model” for sex.

All of these should be considered when listening to the double standards, hypocrisy, and selective outrage over Boebert. She did not behave appropriately, and she admitted that. She acknowledged she lost the voters’ trust and understood “the nature of how this looks.” But it also included a request for forgiveness. And, as part of her penance, she stated she would work to earn trust back — a promising declaration that all her critics overlooked.

“We know we will have to work to earn your trust back, and it may not happen overnight, but we will do it,” Boebert said. “I’m deeply thankful to those in the 3rd District who have defended me and reached out this week and offered grace and support when I needed it the most. I’ve learned some humbling lessons these past few days, but I vow moving forward, I will make you proud.”

People can condemn and criticize what she did, but as Jesus said in John 8:7, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone …” Lauren Boebert pledged to do better. Let’s allow her to uphold that promise. She deserves the chance for a redemption story, especially considering Democrats like Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton had that opportunity.
