Newsom has no problem with the Biden family’s corruption

In case you have lost track of where we are in the Hunter Biden-President Joe Biden corruption scandal, one of the Bidens’ most prominent defenders now says that it is no big deal that Hunter leveraged his last name to rake in millions from countries such as China and Russia.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) dismissed concerns about Hunter Biden using his father’s name and position as vice president in business deals, saying, “If that’s the new criteria, there are a lot of folks in a lot of industries, not just in politics, where people have family members and relationships and they’re trying to parlay and get a little influence and benefit in that respect. That’s hardly unique.”

Newsom went on to say that he doesn’t “love that any more than you” but that it was no basis for an impeachment inquiry. While he has very clearly ignored the real evidence that Joe Biden had more of a role in Hunter Biden’s business dealings than the president has wanted to admit, the idea that Newsom doesn’t “love” people using the government to personally benefit them is a little silly, given Newsom’s own record.

Newsom, of course, used his position as governor to shut down schools and mask children while sending his own children to in-person classes at private schools and to camps that did not require children to be masked. Newsom put heavy restrictions on indoor dining, which he then ignored to attend the birthday celebration of a lobbyist. He shut down wineries in several counties while allowing his own wineries to remain open, and also skirted around the state’s travel ban to vacation in Montana.

Not only that, but Newsom is no stranger to gaining questionable financial benefits from his position as governor. His wife has raked in over $1 million from public schools across the country screening documentary films from her non-profit, some of which happen to also serve as campaign ads for Newsom himself. As my colleague Quin Hillyer has noted, the payouts don’t just come from schools: “Lobbyists and other favor-seekers who might have maxed out on campaign contributions to the governor can get even more in his good graces by donating to his wife’s ‘charity,’ all while rubbing shoulders with the California first couple at the charity’s fundraising galas.” Some of those donors have included California powerhouses Kaiser Permanente and Pacific Gas and Electric.

And all of that is before you even get to Joe Biden backpedaling from his claims that he never discussed business with his son or being proven wrong in his claim that Hunter Biden did not make money from China. Joe Biden even has repeatedly claimed that Hunter Biden has done “nothing wrong.” Dare I say that all of that, in connection to Hunter Biden’s business dealings, gun crimes, and tax crimes, is enough justification for an impeachment inquiry?

Newsom’s point, though, is that Democrats should be allowed to be as corrupt and sleazy as any politician or business leader has been without being held responsible for it. Newsom himself has practiced that with how he has exempted himself from California laws and his own executive orders because Newsom has always believed that he is simply better than the peasants that everyone else calls “voters.”
